Immigration is often expressed as a local concern, separate from global migration and development issues. Yet the lived experience of immigrants spans beyond local realities. “Living Migration” brings the local and global conversations together to create a unified dialogue. For the “Living Migration” Workshops, participants will break into smaller groups to focus on four key issues: Labor Organizing, Rights & Inequality, Citizenship & Legality, and Transnational Connections.
The conference invites public officials, practitioners, academics, and students to examine policy opportunities and grassroots action on global and local levels, as well as the potential impact of these policies and actions in New York City.
The goal of IPSA’s Spring Conference is to bridge the local and international dialogues on migration, conversations that generally remain separate. New York City is the quintessential American city of immigrants, and we want to use the conference to explore how our very local experiences of migration are tied into global migration flows and their impact on both migration sending and receiving countries.
The broad idea for the conference is to get at the heart of how policy impedes or enables positive policy opportunities and how grassroots action grows around, within, or in spite of impediments. The conference is designed to engage students and the New York City community with leading officials, practitioners, and academics to explore policy opportunities and grassroots action globally and what these policies and actions might look like here in New York City.
